Over 11 years ago, I became a huge fan of Lana's music. In the summer of 2015, I had just landed my first job after college. One day, while sitting at my desk, the concept just popped into my head. Ever since then, I've tried bringing it to reality.

I begin every painting with a quick sketch. In the first sketch, I look for basic shapes, patterns or big things to help simplify the art. I think about what approach to use before starting the final version. I conceptualize the colors and materials too.

In 2015, I began a "final" sketch on paper. At the time, the apartment I stayed at had textured walls, so that texture transferred in the final art. I ended up changing jobs, moving and put the painting on pause for a bit.

In 2022, I re-began this painting. Later that year, I received a small business grant from DCEO Illinois and I knew what my first project would be. I bought canvas, wood, paint, brushes and an easel. I built the canvas and began. I was not consistent because I of a toxic work environment and ended up starting over after that employment ended. I did not like how the first version turned out and that reflected in my work.

In 2023, I finally found a new job, was able to pay bills, and build a solid routine. As a result, I started painting more consistently. On my off days, if I was not doing chores, I spent time working on the art. I listened to her music each time and became re-inspired. That pattern continued for roughly ~450 hours.

From 2023 to 2026, I faced a lot of adversity. I changed jobs again and battled a health scare. My biggest life change was losing my grandmother, Ms. Eva Mae James, in February of 2026. I thank God that my grandmother was able to see one of three portraits complete and she loved it. Through everything, I kept painting and listening to good music. Lana's words helped me so much, especially her song, "The Grants."
